The L&S Edit No. 64

There’s a little river that runs through the park down the street. We walk along it every morning and every evening as we take the dogs for their daily romps.

Sometimes, when life feels a little heavier, I find a good rock and sit down beside the babbling water. Often, just the sound of it is enough to soothe my frayed nerves.

Of all my (many) talents, the one that possibly brings me the most joy is my knack for finding pottery shards. For reasons unclear (although most likely and most depressingly to do with the use of rubble from the demolition District 6 for landscaping) Cape Town’s parks will often offer up shards, and I have an uncanny ability to spot those flashes of blue delft on a muddy path, or a gravel walkway, or tucked in between the cracks of a rock.

The L&S Edit No. 61

The mornings have been misty of late. The little stream that runs across the street from our flat – usually no more than a trickle – has been crashing along in a tumbling torrent, the sound of which soothes us to sleep at night. It joins the legion streams, rivers, storm drains and other waterways (seen, unseen) channeling the water caught by Table Mountain down her slopes and to the sea.
