The Weekender Logo

Welcome to Issue #2 of The Weekender

For me, Weekend Mode kicks in at about 11am every Friday. It’s like flipping a switch. The worries of the week become Next Week’s Problem, and between now and then, a whole weekend stretches ahead, full of endless possibilities, and organised by one single thrilling question: what should I do today?

Fridays also mean a new issue of The Weekender - a newsletter designed to trigger Weekend Mode in anyone who reads it.

Read on below and you’ll find:

- Our favourite articles of the week

- Excellent book, music and TV series recommendations

- Things we love that we think you’ll love too

- A very racy podcast (over 18’s only, please!)

So grab a cup of coffee (or perhaps a glass of wine?), kick back and revel in that weekend feeling. We hope what we’ve put together for you in this issue helps you get there. Happy reading!

Did you know you that you can eat these? As it turns out, Black Jacks are a good source of Beta-carotene, Iron, Iodine, Zinc, Calcium, Vitamins A and E. Young leaves are less bitter than older ones: pick the light green top two leaves from older plants. If you are not crazy about the taste of them on their own, just mix in with other greens for a zesty salad

Audacious entrepreneur or con artist? A journalist chases down the story of Anna Delvey, who convinced New York's elite she was a German heiress in this new Netflix series.

WORTHY 5: Carla Louise Gailey

Five recommendations by writer and podcast host Carla Louise Gailey (a.k.a "CLG The Great").

A question worth asking: By doing this, is it going to compromise my inner peace?

A piece of advice worth passing on: Don’t spread yourself too thin, because no one likes peanut butter thinly spread.

A podcast worth listening to: I mean… if it’s something that will float your boat, you could always give my brand new podcast “Straight Up Candid With CLG” a listen! You can find it on the Radio Life & Style App, on the web and on Spotify.

A word worth knowing: I came across the word Meraki one day and I just fell in love with it, and then I went and had it tattooed on my left tricep. It means to “do something with soul, creativity, or love — when you put "something of yourself" into what you're doing, whatever it may be.”

A place worth visiting: INDIA! I spent two months travelling around the colourful country seeing all that it has to offer. The sights, the food, the people, the colours! Everything! 12/10 - would recommend!

Heard & read

A pick what we've been listening to and read that's caught our eye.

The Book Thief

A beautifully written ode to the unstoppable power of books, even in humanity’s darkest hours. Set in Germany in 1939, “The Book Thief” is a gorgeous novel that follows the story of Liesel, a young girl navigating the frightening world of the Nazi regime. It’s at her brother’s graveside that Liesel steals her first, but certainly not her last, book. Soon, she’s stealing books from Nazi book-burnings, libraries, and anywhere else she can get her hands on them. But Death knows Liesel: he’s seen her before...

Greta Van Fleet

If you're a fan of Led Zeppelin, then you're probably going to froth over Greta Van Fleet. "From the Fires" is their second EP, consisting of eight songs released back in November 2017. It's refreshing to hear a band as young as Greta Van Fleet keep the rock genre alive in this current music landscape. Tracks to definitely check out are Safari Song, Talk On The Street and Black Smoke Rising. These tunes are bound to make the hair on your arms give their own standing ovation. .

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Curated selection of good reads

How I Became the Honest Broker 👤 Ted Gioia takes you through his chance encounter with a drunk Australian in a hotel bar (during a Chinese business trip in the 90's), who introduces him to the concept of the"honest broker". In essence the honest broker is a "who's who" kinda person: your fixer, the person that can introduce you to the right connections and people. They are type of person that helps you out solely for one simple reason: their prestige is enhanced by making these connections. In many cases, they don’t even want to be paid. Or let me put that differently - you repay them by becoming a trusted contact for them in future dealings... Read more

Let's Do the Timewarp Again 🕺 There is a demo tape from 1973. It’s an amateur single-track cassette tape recording. Traffic sounds bleeding in from the street. A few loose backing vocals drift in and out from across the room. The voice belongs to Richard O’Brien, and in this lost demo tape (a copy of which surfaced for purchase and download once and briefly in 2015), he lays down from top to bottom the first draft of The Rocky Horror Show, a 1973 niche stage musical that became a movie that became a cult, still screened and performed across the world over 40 years later. The Story of Wanderlust Co 🏡 My husband, Matt, has always been one to jump at an opportunity in business. He loves working on new ideas, and has a brain like Rainman, which I think makes him the successful entrepreneur he has become. In early January 2019, Matt opened the car door so fast that he smashed it into his head causing him a concussion (not something you would think a Rainman-like individual would do the way I have described above, right?). Needless to say, he was under strict instructions: no reading, no writing and no screens, be it TV or computer. So, no work for him. This is when the man’s brain could not switch off (see where we’re going with this?)... Read more
